Celexa side effects different this time around

Posted by joe schmoe on July 13, 2012, at 6:43:57

I have been on (mostly) and off celexa / citalopram for the past ten years. I've gone off it (with the usual unpleasant dizziness/brain shocks) a number of times, and then back on it later, and the side effects have always been limited to the common sexual and appetite/weight gain ones.

Last time I went on it in 2010 after giving time release Wellbutrin a try, the citalopram gave me terrible onset anxiety for a full three weeks, which was unusual for me, but it eventually settled down to the sexual and weight gain stuff. I went off it in 2011 to try Viibryd for six months, which I ended in December.

Six weeks ago I decided to go back on citalopram. Not only did it have a long period of onset anxiety, along with some strange sensations in my head, but it has given me terrible insomnia. I decided to try lowering it from 20 to 10 to no avail. Even at 10 mg I can't sleep through the night and wake up constantly throughout the night and spend long periods trying to get back to sleep. I think I am going to have to go off it, this is really intolerable.

Has anyone else had the experience of a familiar medicine giving different (and bad) side effects than they have experienced in the past? I wonder if it could have something to do with the Aurobindo generic I am taking, but that seems unlikely.
