Pretty sure in this post Matt is referring to his mother as the "idiot," not his doctor. (see his thread above) I don't think he thinks his current doctor has ruined his entire life. He has a long and difficult history at home. I am sure his mom loves him but there is something amiss, IMO, from reading his posts here for 7 years about the atmosphere at home. Notice in the thread above where he answers all of zonked's questions that a teacher first alerted someone to help Matt in 6th grade because s/he suspected verbal abuse. I have a hunch that teacher was quite perceptive. I could be wrong, of course.

I also don't think it's a black and white thing to say he would not benefit from stimulant meds **for ADD** assuming his dx of that is correct. I have ADD and my life became infinitely better on meds. Luckily, I can use Strattera and/or MPH + a low dose of Prozac and get similar results. I have no abuse or addiction to any med in my history, though. Matt has a much tougher road as he went down that path before. It's a really, really hard spot he is in....saying this as someone who knows what it's like to be overwhelmed by extreme ADD symptoms. It is so hard not to seek relief from that cluttered brain, racing thoughts, lack of almost any executive functioning, constant overstimulation, etc. I understand why Matt wants the relief he remembers - even partial relief - if he had even 50% of the difficulty functioning in life as I did prior to finding the correct meds for ADD. My work, home and personal lives were falling to pieces before tx.

I do agree there are perhaps other meds needed as well for depression, etc. I am not a doctor or an expert in anything except my own life and experiences with ADD. ADD can be just as devastating as any mood disorder, etc. I wish therapy was part of this puzzle....not brief visits with a pdoc...but real, focused therapy from an ADD expert. However, with no possibility of adding a stim at any point (assuming that the non-stimulant ADD meds are not efficacious) therapy alone might not be enough.

It's complicated, is mainly what I am saying. Matt, if you;'re reading, I know you know it's complicated. I can only continue to suggest baby steps, one a day if you can manage, to move toward independence. Morgan's ideas about diet and exercise are great ones and even tiny steps there could give you something to concentrate on every day.

MDD (presently in complete remission); ADD-Inattentive type; mild anxiety (not fomally dx'd)

Meds: Strattera 80 mg q day
