Mild hypernatremia in my patients on Depakote

Posted by navyshrink on March 3, 2011, at 12:51:49

I'm seeing a lot of mild hypernatremia in my patients on Depakote ER (divalproex SODIUM). Do you simply get an excess of sodium when, in the gut, it dissociates into the valproate ion? Anything to worry about if asymptomatic? Is this something I should already know and just haven't seen it before?

Anyone see any utility in checking urine and plasma osmolality and urine sodium?
