In reply to Memantine users -did you get depression initially?, posted by TriedEveryMedication on August 3, 2010, at 0:15:24
how much are you currently taking? i found memantine to have a potent-yet-ultimately-impractical stimulating effect for the first few days i spent at 5mg - by which i mean, i became so caught up in my own animated streams of thought that it became impossible to focus on anything else. thereafter i found that the effects indeed fluctuated and there were days where i felt particularly depressed and emotionally reactive. i ultimately gave up after reaching 20mg, but think i may have potentially done better at a lower dose.
remember that due to its long (72 hour) half-life, you need to give each dose at least a week to reach stable blood concentrations. from what i can gather, therapeutically beneficial doses range from between 10 and 20mg in the case of ADD, so it might be a good idea to give each dose some time before determining whether it's necessary to move up. for what it's worth, most of the benefits seem to be with respect to focus/attention. i've never heard of it negatively impacting motivation, but i don't know if it will do much to improve it.
