There has been more than one study on lithium on DHEA / DHEA-S levels. There was a in vivo, human study which concluded theraputic doses lower DHEA/S.
DHEA interacts with the sigma-1r receptor. Sigma agonists like DHEA have antidepressant and neuroprotective effects. Low DHEA could possibly produce apathy, low energy and/or sexual dysfunction.
OTOH, mania might be associated with elevated DHEA and hence this might be part of the antimanic effect of lithium.
