If I read that correctly, and it's highly possible that I didn't, it seems to indicate that it isn't as simple as "I take substance X and it raises/lowers cortisol". Interesting. So there seems to be an underlying mechanism that modulates our response to substances (and maybe stress) in regards to cortisol (and probably every other hormone). Which explains how I, for example, could not handle caffeine at one point in my life, and now I can enjoy it in moderation. I don't think the answer lies entirely in the brain.
