Mirtazapine is particularly useful for depression where insomnia is a problem. It is quite sedating when taken at night. Some drowsiness may persist the following day, especially at first. It may have some efficacy in anxiety as well as depression. The most unpopular side effect is weight gain. It's a useful drug to combine with SSRIs because there does not appear to be an interaction.
Mirtazapine has a different mechanism of action to SSRIs. Because of this, it can be useful when SSRIs haven't worked.
