'stimulant' isn't a concrete term, and since its a drug with positive effects there is lots of politics in the word. see also 'narcotic' which has a legal classification that includes drugs that have nothing to do with teh orignal meaning (opioids).
methylphenidate does not release catecholamines, but does block reuptake. it is not chemically an amphetamine (a structural word, Alpha Methyl PHenyl EThylAMINE), unlike drugs like MDMA. it is not structurally like cocaine either, though that is probably the most similar drug, though cocaine has more serotonergic effect i think.
