In reply to Melatonin with Parnate? Is it ok, posted by kirbyw on January 16, 2010, at 13:49:24
I don't see any direct contraindications.
However:
MAO metabolises melatonin as in addition to monoamines. This means that melatonin could (theoretically) have a longer half life and possibly greater biological activity when coadministerd with an MAOI
Melatonin potentiates the effects of the 5-ht1a receptor. This means that 5-ht1a receptor mediated effects could be increased following melatonin.
For instance, serotonergic side effects could be greatly increased with melatonin. Especially watch out for things like shivering.
While melatonin may work for regular insomnia, it may just not work for parnate related insomnia. I have a hunch that it may sort of work, but leave you feeling icky the next day.
