Some more ideas for you Delna.

At various forums of other chronic diseases where depression is major problem, there are so rather unheard of things that work for a wide variety of people around the world. If they work for them, they certainly have high potential for you and me.

I already mentioned Rhodiola. You can research that on the web and probably find excerpts from the book "Rhodiola Revolution", written by a psychiatrist who's MD wife used it to help recover from Lyme, and who prescribes it regularly as monotherapy or combination with ADs with his own patients.

The ones that work well at other forums include:

Free & Easy Wanderer. This is a Chinese blend of safe herbs that calm and lift the spirit simultaneously. Many Lyme patients are finding it the best, after failing many meds or being unable to tolerate meds.

An Shen Buxin. Another Chinese blend, often combined with Free & Easy Wanderer.

Albizia Julibrissin. This one caught my attention when it showed up at other forums but then showed up here on the Alternative page as well.

The reason I mention all of these is for several reasons:

1. Safe, nontoxic, appropriate for longterm use, fast acting, and work when meds don't. Probably because they are addressing a host of underlying biochemical dysfunctions throughout the body, not the narrow focus of just serotonin or whatever.

2. They are working on profoundly deep longstanding depressions with known or unknown causes.

I don't know where you would order them. In USA the best source is chineseherbsdirect.com.

For challenging the infectious disease angle, I would suggest:

1. Allicin capsules (Allimax is a brand, Dr Zhang has an excellent brand, and a few others). This is the active anti-infectious ingredient of garlic. The de-odored versions are useless for infections. In the absence of pure Allicin supplements, a substitute would be 8 cloves of raw garlic per day, taken at the end of meals where the stomach PH converts Allicin properly. Chewing raw cloves can be quite revolting I found. Chew them with mouthfulls of food. Herx reactions usually show up at about 2 weeks, sometimes sooner. The only side effect is the odor. You can eat a lot of parsley to reduce that, or take chlorophyl supplements.

2. Artemisin. This is the active ingredient of Wormwood. Safe, nontoxic, powerful against Babesia (common Lyme co-infection) and most worms and protozoans.

3. I favor the herbal rememdies of Dr Zhang. He ships internationally and also does phone consultations across the world. Wide spectrum antimicrobials to induce a diagnostic Herx reaction would include Coptis Root, HH capsule, or formula 5081.

4. While I favor the Chinese herbs due to their centuries of research and clinical experience in hospital settings, the USA is more experimental using things like Oil of Oregano, Olive Leaf Extract, Pau D'Arco, Caprylic Acid (coconut derivative), Grapefruit Seed Extract, and others. I know from my own personal experience with these that they can indeed induce a serious diagnostic Herx reaction.

Something else that I think would be very beneficial is to reduce inflammation, even if you don't know if you have any or not. We often don't know, and it may present as depression (lack of oxygen to the brain, constricted blood vessels in the brain). An infectious agent is likely the cause, but still, we need to reduce the inflammation response. An herb called Circulation P is outstanding for that. It can even improve mood in less than a day, as I discovered, even though that is not its intended outcome.

Lots of stuff for hope. I would keep the focus on the herbs I mentioned that are working for other tough cases, and challenge the infectious causes.
