The people who need benzos most are probably those who should avoid them because they will take them forever with declining efficacy as you say. I'm like you, Vincent, except that I would not attempt a speech in front of 100 people. (I did tutorials OK, because I could remain sitting and there was only a table full of people. Speeches are best avoided anyway; no one likes them unless they're very good.) When I was at school I used to debate, and though I was nervous it was something that did not get worse. Now I'm so acquainted with the rapid heartrate before speaking that I do not attempt it. My pulse rate must go to 140 and it's not worth it, though I'm sure a small dose of a beta blocker with some Valium would help..
After 30mg of Valium I wouldn't so much be sedated as I would forget what I had to say. Benzos are not so good for social anxiety because with social interactions we have to be able to think clearly. Sometimes on amphetamine (for the good early bit) I have felt really relaxed because I could always see what was coming next.
Agomelatine will be available soon enough, even in Canada and Australia, and maybe that will be of some use to you. At least it helps you get a natural sleep.
