I agree, Sigismund, but also think that it wouldn't work for everyone. Maybe I0%-20% would respond long-term positively.
The America of the I9th century had the so-called "patent" medicines that were often opiates or alcohol by other names. People often medicated themselves with laudenum, which was an alcoholic herbal preparation of opium. The medical profession was in it's infancy, with many quacks and just plain ignorant people practicing medicine. People were really on their own, and even if they could afford a doctor, they avoided them.
