Same here...Was on Nardil and Parnate and used to drink at least 2 shakes a day of pure whey protein without any side-effect or tyramine elevation level...

I think the "soy protein" can be the main problem and have to be avoid...whey protein is ok...but not for everyone... You have to try them in small amount first... after, when you are sure it's ok for you, you can go for more of them... but just pure whey protein...

I try to avoid the special blend with booster inside or fat burner...they tend to have extra amino acid inside that make them lesser safe with MAOI's... I also try to avoid green tea extract or others 'naturals' products who are not natural at all anyway...

And no, i'm not now on a MAOI... I'm still wating for the Marplan approved, no news on that one... I guess I will have to follow with the "wonderfull" pristiq...

That's funny how someone who will read the "food to avoid" list will have more strong reaction with "foods to avoid" than someone who just ignore the list and eat what he want... I know that's some well documented cases of "Cheese effects" have occured in the past, but that only occur in a small % of peoples who take a MAOI... Mean that's side-effect or tyramine reaction can be over-exaggerate... the brain is very powerfull...

When I Was on the NArdil, I monitered only for 1 week my blood pressure... after I forgot the "food to avoid list" and the others side-effects... I never got any bad reaction, even if I was eating "cheese, not the strong ones, just mozz and cheedar), I was able to eat soup also or others "foods to avoid" without any bad reactions...strange no?

When I was put on the Parnate, I was reading everywhere that it was the most activating of the MAOI's and I got "over focused" on my blood pressure and on the activation and anxiety increasement... but in fact, the Parnate tend to leave peoples more tired than the Nardil... no wonder why some peoples need stimulant with it... I think a big part of the failure of a MAOI is based on the "false" informations around the MAOI's ... people fear them and when they are put on one of them, they tend to have over reactions...

That's remember me a lot my first Paxil experience, back in 1995.. No Internet at this time and I didn't recieve with my RX the side-effects and interractions list... I Was just taking my 2 blue pills each day (60mg total) and I never had any side-effects on it, except the weight gain... but no sedation, nothing really, just an improve of my panic attacks problem and social phobia... I try it again in 2006 and at this time, I Was aware of all the side-effects that is possible with the Paxil...the fact that he tend to leave the people tired and make some dizness or lighthead effects.... and strangely, I had a terrible experience on it in 2006... I was not able to tolerate a small dose of 20mg without having all the side-effects listed on the fact sheet I receive with the RX... Is it real side-effects or it was just my brain or produce by a kind of "subjection" of my unconscious??? That's the question...

I just think the brain is very powerfull and can produce the side-effects or the "cheese reaction" on a MAOI... they are not more dangerous than the newer AD's... maybe more toxic in higher dose, like the old TCA's, but who will want to take the whole bottle of pills at the same time??? Maybe just someone who feel sucidal... I don't want to lack of respect on anyone here... I just write what I think... For me, I know that reading the side-effects list of a med can make the whole experience and trail a failure... Peoples with anxiety problems and especially GAD or SAD can have more difficulties to find the good meds because they tend to amplify the side-effects...
