The book Amalgam Illness by Phd Andrew Cutler is remommended.
There is debate whether chelation should be done while amalgams are still in place. Most agree it is not a good idea. Long story.
Whether your symptoms are redistribution of mercury or not I do not know. I only know that your description of symptoms fits the description of redistribution. That is, mercury is stirred up and sloshed around but only some of it is making its way to excretion, the rest is being dumped where ever.
If ALA is to be taken at all, it should be very low doses (6mg - 25mg) and needs to be taken in respect of its halflife to prevent redistribution, which means you gotta take it every 3 hours around the clock including interrupting sleep for a dose. It is important to have a steady blood level without peaks and valleys, which means every 3 hours 24/7. Most people do this in rounds...for example 3 days on, 4 days off.
You can help neutralize the bad effects of mercury by taking the supplements Selenium, Zinc, Vit C and E.
