In reply to Why Won't Thyroid Tsh Come Down From Over 11??, posted by Phillipa on January 19, 2009, at 12:28:04
Of course, assuming your antibody levels are stable(unlikely), then you need more thryoid hormone in cold weather (if outside in it) and also need more if you exercise, you need more if you weigh more..you even use thryoid hormones up in digestion and metabolism, so more if you eat more! So unless you have the same activity levels, same antibody level, same weather/temperature exposure (like in airconditioning all day), and eat and exercise much the same.. you should need a varying amount of thyroid hormones every day. Your own thryoid does this on demand.. as your own thryoids production gets lowered you should notice the difference more.
So most people on T4 end up taking more than is required to keep a store..your body stores thyroid hormones everywhere..in every cell membrane for starters! Its too important not to have a reserve.. and that's why you hear of people not feeling the best (never completely normal), unless they have a low TSH ...probably
Docs just try to get you within normal range, or the more informed try to get you down arfound 1.0. This works for some, and me too as I can;t tolerate too high a level in my body(perhaps too much stress on adrenals?, I don't now for sure why), but the anxiety gets too high I think. As I can;t get tested on demand I cant really say for sure what is goling on here..
so everything is a compromise..which is why its better to have at least something from your own thryoid usually.. of course the antibodies wreck havoc and that has to be balanced in..
