Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is the active metabolite of Effexor (venlafaxine). Some people don't convert venlafaxine to desvenlafaxine well. If you're lacking that enzyme, you might respond better to Pristiq than Effexor.

Pristiq is an SNRI. Emsam is an MAOI. Both are anti-depressant, but they have different mechanisms of action.
