This may feel "weird" to you, but it's not an "unusual" feeling for me at all. IMHO, it's one of many bipolar states that isn't characterized very well by the DSM IV. It's perhaps a category of a mixed state, but without the depression component.
I think of it as possibly having an OCD component, or OCD feeling. I'll be tired but feel compelled to watch television and stay up way too late. I feel something like an inhibition from going to bed, like I want to keep going. Or I go to bed and only sleep for an hour.
Clonazepam sometimes helps me when I get in this state. Also, I take Ambien to go to sleep, but often I'll stay wired even while sleeping, a sensation that sounds bizarre to anyone who hasn't experienced it. This includes vivid dreams, but I can also have very vivid dreams while having restful sleep.
So this state is characterized by vivid dreaming for me (especially if I take Ambien), but vivid dreaming can also occur in other states.
