In reply to Seroquel is used to help with depression?, posted by Ramin on March 26, 2008, at 17:45:51

It is also reported to be a partial agonist at the receptor, so its net effect (on 5-HT1A) may depend on concentrations of endogenous serotonin.> Could someone please explain this all to me?
>Stimulation of 5-HT1A enhances dopamine (DA) release primarily in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Excessive or insufficient DA release in the PFC disrupts working memory. Injury to the PFC DA system appears to produce locomotor hyperactivity, while microinjections of DA agonists into the intact PFC reduce the locomotor response to novelty or psychostimulant drugs. Rats self-administer cocaine but not amphetamine into the PFC. There are more facts to look up about PFC DA.
Seroquel also affects many other receptors, and the consequences need to be factored into your model of its pharmacology. The most consistently reported result of its ingestion seems to be a sedative/hypnotic effect.
