Actually, the weight gain from psychotropic medications is usually caused by metabolic changes caused by the medications themselves. Yes, some meds may increase appetite, leading to increased intake, but many cause significant enough changes to metabolism that weight gain can result without changes in eating or exercise patterns.
Because so many doctors do tend to blame the patient for weight gain, I try to correct this view whenever possible -- it's like a soapbox for me, because I know just how devastating the weight gain from these medications can be.
