Because it makes you high I think. And serious long-term use hasn't been carefully studied, but would almost certainly produce negative effects.
I've used it myself and I've watched friends *definitely* have unhappy experiences (although they made it sound cathartic, but they isolated themselves and cried, which sounds kind of sad in my book).
If ecstacy didn't produce an out-and-out high and didn't encourage pleasure seeking dose escalation it seems very likely that it would be legal.
Maybe after the next big drug pops up and grabs the popular medias attention variants of MDMA will be researched. Agonist antagonist?
Anyway, rebound effects include depression which might not be so helpful for someone already suffering from it.
