I read an article about the expression of depression in the indiginous Icelandic people (I think). Anyway they lived in igloos and spent a fair bit of each year staring at the ice walls and watching them melt. This encouraged stoicism in them, and when one of them became incapacitated with depression it would be acknowledged, but not analysed or especially sympathised with........it would be said that so and so had come down with 'it', much like an illness.
More recently women there have been trying to overcome the taboo about the expression of feeling associated with this.
