I would say that poor sleep is a cause of some of the symptoms, and could be a primary cause of depression. With OSA, you could be waking 50-150 times a night, but have no memory of those wakenings. You should get into a sleep clinic, where they'll monitor your sleep (called polysomnography). If you have OSA, and these wakenings, you'll likely get a positive airway pressure mask set-up. It keeps your airway from collapsing, and you don't have the apnea any more.
I think whoever told you about your apnea has done you a big favour.
