It markedly reduced craving, and especially stopped the chain smoking I was doing. Initially it was very activating to me, with definite antidepressant-like effects. As it indirectly stimulates dopamine receptors, it would make sense that it could augment other antidepressants and be useful for the subgroup of depressed patients responsive to dopaminergics.
Effexor XR also decreases the desire to smoke, that's why I hated it...lol It definitely works though.
