The codeine is used in theory as an augmenter for the paracetamol/ibuprofen. They're not marketed as 'codeine preparations' - usually as a more powerful version of a paracetamol/ibuprofen product such as Nurofen 'Plus' or Solpedeine 'Max'.
I sometimes combine Nurofen Plus with Solpedeine Max to get more codeine - I was given both ibuprofen and paracetamol with codeine then tramadol in hospital so I assume it's safe for short term use.
