Parnate, round 2

Posted by halcyondaze on December 5, 2006, at 12:08:24

I was on Parnate for 6 months last year. This drug was a godsend: the only drug that didn't cause my Interstitial Cystitis to flare up and actually seemed to calm my bladder, profound antidepressant effect (sometimes a little too profound, bordering on euphoria), reduced rejection sensitivity/abandonment issues, helped with ADHD symptoms, reduced body dysmorphic disorder, and caused appetite and weight loss.

I was taking 90 mg a day (120 at the highest - I have historically always needed higher doses of antidepressants). Currently, I am taking 60 mg a day (on it now for 3 weeks) and it's just not doing what it did before. Should I push for a higher dose or is it possible that this time the antidepressant response (which starts out strong due to its activating properties) will happen at 60 mg this time? I'm also afraid because I've heard of a high "poop out" rate with Parnate. Is it likely that I had my six months in the sun with Parnate and, having been off of it for seven months, will be unable to experience its antidepressant effects like before?

The reason I went off of it was because of the development of cystic acne. Has anyone else experienced this with Parnate? Did anything help? I'm seeing a doctor next week and hopefully will be able to take some kind of pre-emptive strike against this, but I'm not sure what the cause of the acne was or would be, so I don't know whether a topical treatment or a hormonal treatment would be the best course of action but I've already noticed MANY more blackheads than I had three weeks ago.

Another question is the appetite/weight loss. It's pretty profound, but I remember it went away last time. Is there any way to keep this side effect going?

Also, last time I was prescribed Nifedipine in case of hyptertensive crisis. My new psychiatrist did not concurrently prescribe this. Is it common practice to prescribe Nifedipine and something I should ask my medical doctor about?

Thanks for any help you can offer.
