> I've been on most of the serotonin reuptake inhibitors, Effexor, Cymbalta, Wellbutrin, Nardil, Namenda, and most of the atypical antipsychotics. I AM the definition of treatment resistant. If it's not the serotonin, the norepinephrine, the dopamine, the GABA, the glutamate..then what is it? Pot helps, but don't think I advocate it in any way. I don't know why it helps, either because it targets one of the pathways involved in OCD or simply because I'm too relaxed to count to 7 repeatedly (one of my compulsions). Opiates are right up there with pot, but that's like playing with fire..same goes for alcohol.
Ok, according to wikipedia the "central dysfunction of OCD involves the receptors nk1, non-NMDA glutamate receptors, and NMDA". I kind of figured we were on to something with the whole glutamate dysfunction hypothesis. I responded to the NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist Namenda, but only at doses double that which had been studied. nk stands for neurokinin apparently...a neurotransmitter, substance P, binds to these nk receptors. There's a drug, Emend (Arepitant), that IS a substance P inhibitor in that it blocks nk1 receptors. It's prescribed to patients receiving chemotherapy..for nausea. Yeah, I don't know about that one.
