I can sure relate. Yikes. So sorry. When it happens again, just keep reminding yourself it is your mind playing tricks on you. And do try to make an excuse to leave. No need to suffer like that. You can be back on a better day, which will come after...you've got this thing treated. Just some opinions...
Instead of xanax, you might consider switching to lorazepam or klonopin. Xanax longterm is usually trouble. Lorazapem lasts longer than xanax and can be taken for years. I have a friend who's been at 1.5mg for many years. Klonopin lasts longer but sometimes causes depression.
A good treatment underneath it all usually involves a serotonin medication. Paxil, effexor, lexapro, zoloft. Once you get past the startup side effects and uncomfortableness, you will be a lot calmer and composed all the time and probably need less of a benzo.
In the natural arena st johns wort can make you feel very comfortable in a crowd, composed, relaxed, interested, and motivated.
With anything, mileage varies. Just some ideas to think about.
