It is all an individual thing when it comes to depression -- some need a stimulant, one that brings out NE, and some cannot stand any of them and need an SSRI.

Personally I have found Cymbalta at 120mg to be a moderate to excellent antidepressant (depending on breakthrough symptoms which crop up inevitably as nothing is a "cure"), but some years ago I tried Effexor and I absolutely couldn't stand it or be able to sleep. But some people are the opposite.

If your doctor is suggesting it, its worth a trial dose at 20mg to see if your body can tolerate it. Don't get into capsule splitting and all that which has been discussed here ad nausea, its more dangerous than its worth.
