I think the "12 oclock rule" is mostly for people who are truely sensitive and have insomnia problems- apparently it can stay in the body for a very long time.I'm only about average in sensitivity to caffeine, but since I started limiting caffeine to before noon, it's made a huge difference to me. Honestly, caffeine does more to wreck my sleep than any of the stims I've taken. I can take Provigil, or Ritalin, or Dexedrine, or whatever at 3 or 4 in the afternoon, and sleep fine. But caffeine?
And that's from someone who can't drink regular coffee at all -- I either drink decaf, so half the caffeine of regular coffee, or more commonly I get caffeine in colas. (Diet cola, really...)
Then again, there's my mother, who falls asleep as soon as you turn down the lights -- don't go to a movie with her, although she seems to stay awake at the opera -- and drinks coffee by the pot.
