Hi Mark,
I've been taking Inderal LA 80mg twice daily for about 2 years now. Very inexpensive. I take one when I first begin my day, and the other when I go to bed. It helps to keep my blood pressure and pulse at an even tone, and prevents my heart from being flooded with adrenaline when I get anxious. It works wonders because I would find myself in a panic attack when I could feel my heart beating in my head, chest, back, fingertips....you get it! Lol. Now that doesn't happen. But you have to understand that the beta blockers will only work on the PHYSICAL symptoms of anxiety. You should also advocate to your doc that you want a benzo as well (which works on the PSYCHOLOGICAL symptoms of anxiety).
The beta blockers don't get me out the door and into the world.....only the benzos do that. BUT...the beta blockers help me to be more relaxed at home, knowing that everything is beating and performing at a steady state and I can relax. I haven't had an outright panic attack since I can't remember when!
Good luck with your doctor. Just remember that the Inderal LA works best if taken every 12 hours (that's why I take it when I get up and when I go down for the night *smile*). And a benzo is DEFINATELY required for someone with severe anxiety in order to provide that person with a quality of life that is acceptable to you.
Let us know how it goes!
Hugs,
Sandy
