EMSAM might affect REM sleep in a manner more like Wellbutrin. I think the MAO-A inhibition is needed for the REM suppressant effects.
I think that REM sleep tries to ballance the noradrenergic/cholinergic systems. If REM is not working properly, or is increased (such as in some depression), perhaps there is a cholinergic dominance and hence depression.
The funny thing is that REM sleep supression itself increases serotonin in the hippocampus
REM supression also decreases the beta-adrenergic and 5-ht2 systems as is seen with antidepressant treatment.Interestingly enough, rats that undergo REM deprivation also show increased sensitivity of d2 receptors, as is often seen with effective antidepressant treatment.
