I don't know if dreaming is restricted to just REM sleep, I could be wrong.
Before the monoamine hypothesis REM sleep hypothesis was very strong. Pretty much all effective antidepressants supress REM sleep. Infact, if you take an extremely depressed individual, connect them up to a eye scanner, and wake them up whenever they start to enter REM, they will likely wake up very chipper the next morning.
In addition, if you take enough of an agent that counteracts the drug induced REM supression, (often cholinergics), you can often completely abolish any antidepressant effect.
I think thats all our current antidepressants are, is a bunch of REM supressing agents.
