yeah...also, i like the in-between concepts of "temporary drug usage" (ex: neuroleptics for acute schizophrenic episodes or severe mania only) or "limited treatment". Apparently, European guidelines for bipolar treatment allow for eventual discontinuation of mood-stabilizer treatment after a period of stability. I think the APA also allows for it, but in practice "meds for life" is the most common practice.
But..I dislike neuroleptics overall. I'm also interested in alternative meds for schizophrenia, when appropriate--some docs apparently think schizophrenia is like bipolar disorder, only with an unusually heavy psychotic component....the idea, I suppose, is that you can use mood stabilizers in "schizophrenia" (psychotic bipolar) with minimal (if any) use of neuroleptics. Also, Benzos apparently help with schizophrenia, too.
