Its taken a while for the NYT to finally cover drug-free schizophrenia but I guess once it hits the NYT it actually becomes "news". Anyway...I kind of noticed that the article didn't mention Soteria, the Loren Mosher-led psychosocial, neuroleptic-free project in the late 70s that put drug-free schizophrenia treatment back on the map (albeit briefly). Apparently there's going to at some point be an Alaska Soteria.
Cool article, overall. It kind of makes me wonder...are we in the beginnings of a new phase of anti-psychiatry? The first phase, from the 60s-70s, gave patients new rights and freedoms and overall made psychiatry (somewhat) more humane. With all the failures of the antidepressants and over-priced "atypicl" antipsychotics, are we headed for a second anti-psychiatry movement, one spurred on by the enormous costs and disappointing results of today's psychiatry? I kind of think we are.
