In reply to Ritalin and Strattera?, posted by Bob Jones on January 23, 2006, at 15:39:29
Yup. Been on Strattera - 80 mg/day for 2 years now for ADD, and my pdoc prescribes Ritalin (generic methylphenidate, really) as well when I ask for it. She gives me 10 mg. tabs, 60 at a time, to use as needed (usually need at least 20-30 mg. to have any noticeable effect).
There is no contraindication I'm aware of with these two,but of course, everyone's brains respond differently, so it's always a trial and errror deal.
I used to be on a combo of Ritalin and Prozac, prior to the Strat. We eliminated the AD when depression was no longer an issue, and substituted the Strattera when it became available to see how it would be for me. There were also mild hypertension issues w/ritalin at the high doses I needed, but once my BP was controlled with the proper meds, it didn't raise it at all.
I prefer Strattera overall for the way it allows my inner world to be more peaceful and the sensory overload to calm down, but ritalin's action really energizes me out of the paralysis of will I've always had with ADD, and allows long stretches of focus in a day - like for college studies, etc. So, I take it every once in a while when I think it'll help.
Sorry for the long answer to a simple question :-)
