Seems like your question was already answered, but here's my experience....
When I have taken Remeron, I always took it at night, which is how it was prescribed. So, yes it was sedating, but since I took it at night, that was a good thing.
Weight gain...this is a tough question because I went on both Celexa and Remeron at the same time, during a severe episode of anxiety, and I did gain about 10 pounds, but who knows which of the things caused it, I am guessing Remeron. Also, I built up a better social life, which leads to more eating. My weight leveled off after the 10-pound gain. I am on Remeron again now (15 mg at night) and Lexepro (10 mg in the morning).
I haven't noticed any serious side effects, for me, on the Remeron.
