Hi Tom,
Some nasal sprays containing 'safe' ingredients such as antihistamines also contain 'dangerous' ingredients (decongestants) which can cause a hypertensive crisis if combined with an MAOI.
Decongestant sprays, drops, tablets, capsules and liquids can all cause a hypertensive crisis. Carefully check the ingredients of ANY medicine you take.
Examples of contra-indicated decongestants include........
Ephedrine
Phenylephrine
Pseudoephedrine
Oxymetazoline
Xylometazoline
Naphazoline
Tramazoline
Phenylpropanolomine
.........and more. These drugs can be found in nasal sprays, nasal drops, eye drops, eye ointments, eye 'brightening' drops, oral decongestants, cold/flu medicines, herbal medicines (ephedrine), appetite suppressants, anal/rectal creams/ointments/suppositories for piles/haemorrhoids etc.
Many such preparations are on sale to the public.
An example of a contra-indicated preparation is 'Rynacrom allergy' - which contains sodium cromoglicate, a 'safe' ingredient and xylometazoline, a 'dangerous' ingredient.
Take care,
~ed
