I forgot to mention that desipramine is the immediate metabolite of imipramine. If you take imipramine, you will be supporting a therapeutic blood level of desipramine at the same time. If imipramine doesn't work at high dosages, it is unlikely that desipramine will.

If side effects with imipramine are intolerable despite an antidepressant response, but desipramine proves inadequate, you can try either adding some Prozac to the desipramine or switching to nortriptyline.
