In reply to Nardil- New Rx Have Diet Questions/ Please help!, posted by babyrob on July 25, 2005, at 3:01:43
Hi. I've been on and off Nardil numerous times. Currently am on it, at 45 mg/day. First thing, I would ask your physician for the med which will counteract the blood pressure increase in case you do ingest something will a lot of tyramine. Sorry, but I forget the name of it. You might want to keep that with you until you feel comfortable with your diet. You can carry it in something in your pocket, such as a contact lens case. That's how I carry my Klonopin, just in case I'm asked to give a major presentation that I haven't been told of.
As far as my diet, I eat pepperoni pizza, processed cheese, and sliced cheese. These aren't exotic pizza's with the possibiity of aged cheeses, though. Mainly Dominos or Little Caesars varieties. Small amounts of Parmesan also don't cause me a problem. I also don't have a problem with Miller Lite beer and White wines. When I do eat sausage, it's in pretty small quantities and nothing that's been aged. I also have no problem with regular cheddar cheese (the kind which comes in a block). This is the stuff next to the American processed cheese.
I definitely stay away from aged yellow cheeses and, in fact that whole exotic cheese isle at the grocery store. The more pungent the odor, the more they've been aged and, I understand, the higher the tyramine content. I also stay away from red wines and aged meats. Anything with which I'm not familiar, I stay away from, such as a meat patte' dish. As far as beer, I'm careful to avoid anything other than the high volume regular, light colored beer. I have no problem with Corona, Miller, or Budweiser. I avoid the microbrewery beer, as I once had a tremendous headache after just having one microbrewery beer. Apparently, it was pretty well aged and with substantial tyramine. Scotch, even aged Scotch liquor doesn't cause me a problem. I have no problem with regular, non-aged meats, such as steak, hamburger, chicken, turkey, and so forth.
Overall, I try to avoid anything with a strong odor or towards the exotic side. Also, when in doubt, stay away from it. Lastly, keep the antidote pills handy just in case you ever do experience a severe headache from something with Tyramine which you thought was safe.
Hope this helps, somewhat. Please keep in mind that what I've said is only what works for me. You may be more or less sensitive to some things. Also, having the antidote medicine nearby, to lower your blood pressure, may help you as you identify what foods/drinks your body can tolerate.
