As far as I know the recommended treatment depends on the results of sleep study and/or physical exam. If airway obstructions are causing significant arousals, they will likely first try a CPAP. A CPAP will often help people who are chronically congested. Surgery is a secondary option for OSA. If your're breathing and O2 levels are OK, then the approach is focused toward insomnia. Xyrem is used a lot at my clinic for those who can't get into delta sleep and especially if you have fibromyalgia. I'm not sure how much they use barbituates. I've had many nights in which I sure could have used something like seconal. A lot of the sleeping pills handed out thise days aren't much better than taking a shot of whiskey. -
