If your doctor doesn't seem to know about them, I would consider finding one who does.
I would bring in literature (article) on the effectiveness of the medication. If you do searches on www.medscape.com and other such sites you will find them. Also Depression Central talk about them under Treatment resistant depression. I'm sure there are people here who can provide you with some guidance.
I don't find the food restriction difficult to follow for two main reasons: I am vegetarian and many of the restricted foods don't effect me at all. You can try some of the "no-no" foods in small amounts and see how you do.
There is a YAHOO group just for people who take MAOI. Under groups just type in MAOI and it should be the only one. People there might have more hints on how to help you.
