time before antipsychotics kick in

Hey! Seroquel, like most antipsychotics, takes a while to "kick in". Usually, calming effects are seen almost immediately with antipsychotics, particularly sedating ones. Problems with agitation and high-level anxiety usually start to respond within a week or two...when used for depression, results may be seen almost immediately in some cases and within a few weeksw in others. The calming effects of anti-psychotics help control mania immediately, and the antipsychotic can usually be withdrawn (assuming its being used just for acute mania, not as a maintenance med) within a month or so. For people with more chronic psychotic conditions, like schizophrenia or schizoaffective, response time varies; usually, a full "trial" of an antipsychotic takes 4-6 weeks, after which response is evaluated and any changes deemed necessary are made.
