Buprenorphine is a mixed agonist/antagonist opioid drug. If you look it up on google, you can find out how it works; I've posted an account of how it works so many times here that I just can't bring my fingers to do it again. ;)
Buprenorphine combines very well with MAOIs, and without incident. The only opioids that one cannot use with MAOIs are demerol/meperidine/pethidine and its derivatives (such as tramadol). However, those are so toxic compared to other opioids I don't know why they're even prescribed. Well, I _do_ know, but the logic is twisted and perverse.
My dose of Nardil is 75mg/day, and I've been on it since May 3. I actually started at 60 at the request of my pdoc, whose supervisor (she is very young and just got her license, so she needs help using MAOIs since they don't teach anyone anything about using them in practice anymore; pathetic, huh?) felt that 75mg (the therapeutic dose is generally 1mg/kg, and I am 80kg) was too high a dose to start me on, despite taking the 120mg/day parnate beforehand. Well, after about 2 days at 60mg, I started getting brain shocks akin to SSRI withdrawal. I bumped it up to 75mg, and the day after I bumped it up, the withdrawal zaps were signficiantly attenuated. Hopefully they will go away soon. It's simply too early to say which side effects I am having from Nardil.
In terms of side effects, Parnate gave me: occasional impotence, delayed orgasm, and insomnia, sometimes severe. That's it.
Nardil seems like it increases my appetite somewhat, makes me overly tired after my morning dose, delayed orgasm. That is it so far.
Both drugs (especially with buprenorphine) are superior to any other antidepressant (and many illicit mood elevators, too) for me.
