"Drug stacking"? IOW, do you think a lot of people are being misdiagnosed as bipolar due to a mania induction from serotonergic antidepressants? Is mania induction by serotonergics an *indicator* of bipolar illness or just a SIDE effect of the serotonergic?

>Yes, that's the dilemma.. IF an "antidepressant" triggers a manic reaction.. should you be given an AD at all - even with an antimanic mood stabilizer? And if you conclude that you shouldn't be on a conventional antidepressant at all, will the "mood stabilizer" on its own (no matter which one) really deal with the depression? There are some pdocs who believe that if you just "wait", the cycling and activation induced by the AD's will settle down and you will wind up with less depression overall than you had before you tried taking a string of differing AD's. It seems that a completely new type of antidepressant is needed either for clearly bipolar people and those which may actually be experiencing nothing but a side effect of hypomania from the "conventional" AD's. I don't completely buy the idea (just yet), that a drug which has been invented that triggers hypomania in someone means *necessarily* that the person IS bipolar.
I'm going to try doing without any AD's and just take my Depakote and clonazepam (with fishoil), but this is my usual "high" time of the year, so that's probably easy to try FOR NOW. Don't know what will happen in June/July when I head south again. In the past on lithium (alone), it helped with depression but not enough. I never tried just Depakote and clon. by itself to see if I could wade through one...
