> My doctor actually told me today that if one of his patients is bipolar 1-5 (apparently there are 5 numbers now, ha ha), he recommends not using ANY antidepressent (like Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro) that messes with the seratonin system. He just said that in BP people, that when you use those meds to treat their anxiety or depression- you are asking for mania.

>It's nice to start with a clean slate to see what you need to treat every once in a while. I really think I'm more ADD than anything, but since I had anxiety mixed with depression, my pdoc automaticcally said I was BPII and anytime I complained about anxiety she said I was experiencing mania. ALL THIS TIME IT HAS BEEN SIDE EFFECTS. I originally started meds for anxiety and depression caused by alcohol.
...Wow, interesting discussion! Do you guys think that a lot of people are being put on mood stabilizers (anitmanics) to treat what is really a side-effect of an SSRI (drug induced manic sx)? "Drug stacking"? IOW, do you think a lot of people are being misdiagnosed as bipolar due to a mania induction from serotonergic antidepressants? Is mania induction by serotonergics an *indicator* of bipolar illness or just a SIDE effect of the serotonergic? I've been off my usual 1/2mg of Celexa (every other day) now for six days and I don't feel any panic anxiety returning (fingers crossed). But, the weirder thing is I'm not feeling my mind racing and kicking up either (which it normally tends to do at this point in my mood cycling). I've had to double my Depakote at the end of every week now for the past few weeks to keep a handle on my scatter-brainedness, but that isn't happening now, and I don't feel a need for doubling the Depakote. I'm not disputing *my* bipolar diagnosis, though.. Before the SSRI "merry-go-round" started with me in 1991 I was just on lithium 300mg a day, that's it. But, I still got seasonal depressions. I got a sample pack of Prozac just before my winter one usually would start (other than that I felt fine at that moment in time), and had it ready for when I would start to "go down" and "start getting tired". I had a hypomanic reaction after the first dose. Yes, the depression *seemed* to be ameliorated the first time (and at other *times* later), but they *still* continued to recur despite taking Prozac..
