I take 3mg twice daily -- Usually first thing in the morning (~6 AM) and the other around noon. I would point out that even without the second dose, there is minimal 'immediate' withdrawal symptoms or rebound anxiety as it wears off almost so slowly you don't notice.
Xanax XR is much better than regular alprazolam... no peaks or valleys as noted. Unfortunately the price is outrageous and of course there are no generics available. (1 month supply = $360USD for me) If your insurance is covering it -- you are very lucky.
