I gained a ton on Effexor XR, but your mileage will vary.
Here's my advice, and I believe strongly that it's good advice:
Keep a food diary for one month. Write down the time and amount of everything you eat during that time, and be damned honest about it. Every bite of everything with calories in it.
During this period, also record your activity levels -- pedometers are great for this.
Record your weight once a week on this huge diary thing.
And then walk into your doctor's office and show it to him! Tell him that you're not going to insist that it's the meds, but you just don't know how to get the weight off and it is an issue for you. Tell him that you want him to take this seriously, and look over your food diary and help you get your weight back to where you were healthy and comfortable.
It's a time honored tradition in medicine to blame the patient, because it's a hell of a lot easier than having to break a sweat for them. If you have a food diary that includes all that you've eaten for several weeks, he can't just say, "Oh, you're just not willing to admit that you're binging and laying around on the sofa eating bonbons." Make him break a sweat. It's good for him.
And if he doesn't, well, there are other doctors out there.
