Persistent Shortness of Breath

Posted by Maritro on August 21, 2004, at 12:09:49

For the past three months, I have consistently felt short of breath. I went to my GP and after numerous tests (Chest X-Ray, EKG, Echocardiogram) found out that nothing was physically wrong with me. The shortness of breath seems particularly bad during times of high anxiety. I have had problems with anxiety before, and seem to experience some of the other symptoms of panic attacks such as chest tightness and a fear of death. However, the symptoms seem less episodic and more continuous. I don’t seem to have symptoms consistent with GAD and experience no ruminating thoughts or persistent fear. My anxiety seems to be felt mostly physically.

After seeing my p-doc, I have been taking BusPar and Ativan on and off during this time period, but neither seemed to help. I also discontinued taking Meridia for fear that a stimulant might be causing the problem, but after two months of discontinuation I have felt no relief. I have recently started Paxil CR, but it also seems to have no effect on the shortness of breath. I’m now considering Zoloft. Has anyone else had a similar experience with persistent and anxiety-tied shortness of breath? Has any medication helped the problem? Thank you for any advice or experiences that you can share.

Charles
