Context is a huge part of shaping reactions.
When I fly, I humour myself that I am going to a place where they do many different plays (the airport). They put you in a tube, and you sit there for a while. While you're in there, they run fake scenery and stuff outside the "windows", and shake the whole thing now and again for effect. After a certain time, they let you out of the tube, but they've changed the set so that you're now in another act of the play. The longer you're sitting in the tube, the more opportunity they have to change the set, and when they let you out, the more exotic the set has become. They change the clocks, to really mess you up.
From Shakespeare, As You Like It: "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players:"
Works for me. And it's good for some laughs, once in a while.
