Although Cymbalta (duloxetine) is more balanced than Effexor (venlafaxine) in inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) compared to norepinephrine (NE), it is still skewed towards serotonin. It is difficult to estimate the differences between the two drugs in the real world, though. One study by Eli Lilly estimates the ratios of 5-HT/NE transporter binding affinity to to be 9 for duloxetine and 30 for venlafaxine. This is not a measurement of reuptake inhibition, however, and my guess is that the differences between the two drugs is greater than these numbers suggest.
